Robert Fludd's Divine Monocord (1617)
Monochordum Mundanum in Robert Fludd’s Utriusque Cosmi, (1617 | detail)

In the Republic and the Laws, Plato discusses musical education as a way of disseminating philosophical insight to the citizenry. Through musical training citizens of the ideal state become attuned to the divine principle that ordered the cosmos, thus fulfilling their goal of becoming godlike.

Eva Anagnostou-Laoutides is back! (Remember Plato and Drunkeness.) This time she will open a discussion on musical harmony, the good life and the good society. And not only in Plato. Eva will trace the reception of this aspect of Plato’s teaching through the NeoPlatonists into Christian Platonism and all the way up to Saint Augustine.

Join us 3pm, Saturday 9 May, at the Syme Centre Carlton for the talk, discussion and afternoon tea. Past and present students are all welcome. Please bring along family and friends who might be interested in Plato.

This is a free event with limited places. Book Now | Donations Welcome
