On Monday nights join us for a gentle introduction to ancient Greek language starting with alpha, beta, gamma… Already after a few classes we will consider some of the fragments of those first philosopher who appeared two and three generations prior to Plato. Book First Philosophers

On Wednesday nights we meet for a brand new course focusing in on some of the most famous myths found in Plato’s dialogues. Join us to read and discussing these fascinating stories — and explore the unique role that myth played in Plato’s work. Book Plato’s Myths

The Platonic Academy of Melbourne is pleased to announce that Dr Stavroula Nikoloudis will be presenting our second annual Eric Timewell Memorial Lecture:

Power and Privilege at Pylos: Insights from the Mycenaean Linear B texts.

This free public lecture is open to all those interested in Mycenaean culture and history, and the origins of the Greek language.

Seating is limited, so book a seat (Donations).

Academy Members (join here) are encouraged to attend the AGM and afternoon tea from 3pm, just prior to the lecture.

Twilight term enrolments now open

In Plato’s Republic II, we discuss Plato’s famous allegory of enlightenment

Enrolments are now open for twilight evening classes starting the week of Monday 31 October 2022.

Plato’s Republic Part 2 starts Wednesday, 2 November [BOOKED OUT]. This course covers the more philosophical books of Plato’s Republic. New students are welcome as completion of Part 1 is no prerequisite.

Learning Greek with Plato continues in our Twilight Term, starting 31 October [BOOKED OUT]. If you are new to ancient Greek language then we recommend you wait and enrol in the beginners course, starting again in February 2023.

Reading Plato: an introduction to philosophy will also run again in February 2023.
